Authorities in Uttarakhand have ordered the immediate closure of schools and Anganwadi centers across four districts, including Almora, Pithoragarh, Chamoli, and Rudraprayag, following a severe weather warning from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The decision comes as heavy rainfall continues to batter the region, raising concerns over flash floods, landslides, and infrastructure damage.
The IMD has issued an alert forecasting "heavy to very heavy rainfall" in isolated areas of Uttarakhand’s Garhwal and Kumaon regions. In response, district administrations have temporarily suspended classes for students from grades 1 to 12 to ensure safety.
"The well-being of students is our top priority. Schools will remain closed until the weather stabilizes," said a Chamoli district official. The administration has also directed school authorities to keep parents and staff updated on further developments.
Meanwhile, heavy downpours in Haridwar have led to severe waterlogging in several areas. Authorities are closely monitoring the rising water levels of the Ganga River, with police urging residents and pilgrims to avoid river ghats.
"The situation is under surveillance, but we advise people to stay away from the riverbanks as a precaution," a Haridwar police official stated.
With the risk of landslides and flooding increasing, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been deployed to high-risk zones. Emergency helplines have been activated, and residents are advised to stay indoors unless necessary.
While the school closures are temporary, education officials have indicated that compensatory measures will be implemented if the disruption persists.
Residents and travelers are urged to follow official updates from the Uttarakhand government and IMD. Avoid venturing near rivers or landslide-prone areas until the weather improves.
