It seems global economic uncertainty and slowdown in the tech sector hit the placements at India’s premier engineering colleges this year.
Indian Institute of Technology, Madras on April 8 refuted a new report that claimed almost half the students of the institute’s 2024 batch are yet to secure employment.
The institute said the placements are still ongoing and the final data will be available by the end of July 2024. It further added that some of the students have not decided if they want to pursue higher education or explore other opportunities.
“Placements are still ongoing at IIT Madras. Students have varied interests - some aim for higher studies, others aspire to start their own ventures and explore entrepreneurship, while some plan to appear for competitive exams like civil services. They take time to make these decisions. The placement data will be available at the end of July 2024, after convocation,” the institute was quoted as saying in a report by India Today.
IIT Kanpur alumnus Dheeraj Singh found the data through a right to information (RTI) petition that was filed recently. According to the data, in the current batch of 2024, only 1,150 students were successfully placed in phase 1 and phase 2, while the rest are still looking for offers. This might lead to higher number of unplaced students in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to the data.
Since the beginning of the placement season, IITs have been under the spotlight for the lack of offers students have received this year. The global tech sector has been undergoing a slowdown with various firms reporting layoffs.
Earlier, a report by Hindustan Times had said that 36 percent students of the 2024 batch of another premier institute IIT-Bombay have not secured jobs yet. The institute issued clarification and said the placement season will end in May 2024. In a post on X, it also claimed that only 6.1 percent of the 2022-23 students are still actively looking for employment opportunities.
Moreover, the current batch of IIT-Delhi are also struggling to find suitable offers, according to a report by the Times of India.
