GST collection from coaching institutes jump 146% in 5 years

The guidelines stipulate that the tuition fees for different courses shall be fair and reasonable.

The government has collected Rs 5,517.45 crore in Goods and Services Tax (GST), a 146 percent jump from Rs 2,240.73 crore collected in FY20 from coaching institutes in 2023-24, the Minister of Education informed Rajya Sabha.

The GST collection from coaching institutes have consistently increased since FY20, except slightly dropping in FY21 to Rs 2,215.24 crore. FY 22 recorded Rs 3,045.12 crore GST collection while FY23 saw collection of Rs 4,667.03 crore.

The data was given by Dr Sukanta Majumdar, Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Education on July 24. Three days later, three UPSC aspirants drowned in the basement library of Rau’s coaching centre.

The Delhi Police has arrested seven people in connection with the case, including Rau’s CEO Abhishek Gupta and coordinator Deshpal Singh. Family members of the two victims, Shreya Yadav and Nevin Dalvin, told PTI over the phone that they want justice for all the victims, and they have no information regarding the compensation as nobody from the institute has contacted them.
