A potent weather system brewing over the Bay of Bengal is poised to deliver a prolonged spell of heavy rain and thunderstorms across southern districts of West Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the conditions will persist until Thursday, September 26. Will rain dampen Kolkata’s Durga Puja? IMD’s grim forecast for Bengal
The IMD, in a special bulletin, attributed the impending rough weather to a low-pressure area that has formed over the northeast Bay of Bengal. This system is expected to move northwestwards towards the northwestern part of the bay.
West Bengal weather: Orange, yellow warnings issued
In response, the Met department has issued a mix of orange and yellow alerts for numerous districts. An orange alert, signalling a need to be prepared for severe weather, has been sounded for South 24 Parganas district.
As reported by HT, a yellow alert, advising residents to stay updated, is in place for Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, Purulia, Birbhum, Murshidabad and Malda.
The IMD forecast predicts heavy rainfall, measuring between 7 to 11 centimetres, at one or two places in East and West Midnapore, South 24 Parganas and Bankura on Saturday. These downpours will be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour.
Kolkata rain: Risks of waterlogging and disruption
The meteorological authorities have highlighted significant risks of disruption. They warned of severe waterlogging in low-lying areas and underpass roads. Furthermore, low visibility during intense spells of rain is likely to lead to traffic congestion.
The report detailed advisories for the public, urging people to take shelter in a safe place during intense downpours and to avoid contact with electric poles.
Fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the sea along and off the West Bengal coast until September 27, as sea conditions are expected to be rough.
Durga Puja festive season concerns
This period of unsettled weather arrives at a critical time, just ahead of the major festivities of Durga Puja. Elaborate pandals have been erected across the state, and the forecast raises concerns for the millions who participate in the celebrations.
Light to moderate rain is likely to continue over South Bengal, with thunderstorms at a few places, through September 24, 25 and 26. A respite is expected from September 27, with only very light to moderate rain forecast for isolated areas. The situation remains under close watch as the low-pressure system develops.
