Mumbai and its surrounding regions are on alert as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a day of significant rainfall, prompting warnings for commuters and residents alike.
The city awoke to overcast conditions and scattered showers on Thursday, with the weather office predicting spells of moderate to heavy rain throughout the day, FPJ reported.
A yellow alert has been issued for both today and Friday, September 5, for Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
According to the forecast, the rainfall pattern is expected to see light showers during the morning and afternoon, intensifying to heavier downpours by evening and late into the night.
The increased rainfall activity has been attributed to a low-pressure system currently active over the Bay of Bengal. This system is channelling moisture-laden winds towards India's western coast, significantly enhancing monsoon conditions.
The report indicates that the impacts will be felt across the MMR. In Navi Mumbai, light rainfall is expected initially, progressing to moderate or heavy showers later.
Thane and Kalyan-Dombivli are likely to experience intense spells by evening, which officials warn could lead to water accumulation on several roads and exacerbate traffic congestion during peak travel hours.
Similarly, the western suburbs, including Vasai-Virar and Mira-Bhayander, are forecast to receive moderate rain throughout the day. The IMD has not ruled out the possibility of isolated heavy showers, particularly in coastal pockets.
While the rainfall is expected to ease between September 5 and 7, cloudy conditions will persist. The monsoon's influence is predicted to continue until mid-September, after which a gradual decline in rainfall intensity is anticipated.
Beyond the MMR, the broader Konkan region remains under an orange alert. Districts including Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas today, according to the weather department.
Authorities have advised commuters to plan their travel carefully and stay updated on weather advisories as the situation develops.
