All clean vehicles in India need government’s support and the Prime Minister’s Office believes there is no question of incentivizing one over the other, top government sources told Mint.
This comes at a time when the cracks in the domestic auto industry has widened between hybrid and electric vehicles, with both the segments lobbying the central government for favours. Moreover, the battle has intensified ever since EV makers asked the government to not put the hybrid segment on equal footing, the report said.
However, the top sources cited by the newspaper said there has been unnecessary lobbying and the government can’t prioritise one over the other, adding that Centre has supported both EVs and hybrids.
Moneycontrol could not independently verify the report.
Earlier, Union heavy industries minister HD Kumaraswamy had said the government would continue to support all forms of clean vehicles.
Last month, it was reported Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra and Hyundai Motors opposed Delhi’s state government’s draft policy to equally provide incentives to hybrid electric vehicles.
Under the proposal, the state had proposed to cut road tax and registration fees for both EVs and hybrid vehicles.
