OpenAI is piloting localised pricing for its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT in India in a likely effort to simplify payments for customers in one of its largest markets.
With this move, India becomes one of the few markets where the generative AI pioneer allows customers to pay for the service using local currencies. OpenAI had introduced localised pricing in the United Kingdom (GBP) and European Countries (EUR) earlier this year.
As part of this pilot, OpenAI is offering its Plus tier for Rs 1,999 per month (inclusive of GST) while the costlier Pro tier is available for Rs 19,900 per month (inclusive of GST) on ChatGPT's web app. ChatGPT's Team plan, meant for businesses, is priced at Rs 2,099 per seat per month.
Prior to this, OpenAI charged a monthly fee of $20 for the Plus tier, $200 for the Pro tier, and $30 per seat for the Team plan in India. Moneycontrol has reached out to OpenAI for a comment and will update once we hear back.
This development comes close to the heels of OpenAI releasing GPT-5, the latest and most advanced version of its flagship AI model. GPT-5 features improved support for 12 Indian languages, and comes amid speculation that OpenAI is preparing to launch a more affordable tier called ChatGPT Go, rumored to be priced at Rs 399 per month.
Localised pricing along with more affordable rates were among the key demands that Indian startup founders and developers had placed before OpenAI CEO Sam Altman during his India visit in February 2025, Moneycontrol reported earlier.
In June, Srinivas Narayanan, vice president of engineering at OpenAI, told Moneycontrol in an interview that the company is investing efforts to make its offerings more affordable for developers in the country, as part of a broader push to make AI accessible globally.
India has emerged as the fastest-growing market for the ChatGPT maker and is now its second-largest market outside the United States. Altman had recently said that India could soon become the largest market for ChatGPT, as it already has around 700 million weekly active users.
That said, competition is heating up in the space as rivals such as Google and Perplexity too are focusing on driving adoption to their respective products in India.
Perplexity is offering a one-year free subscription to its premium tier, Perplexity Pro, to all 360 million customers of the telecom operator Bharti Airtel. Meanwhile, Google is providing a one-year free subscription to its premium AI tools to college students in India.
