US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order creating the “Genesis Mission”, a large-scale government initiative designed to use artificial intelligence to speed up scientific discovery across key sectors.
The order directs the Department of Energy to develop a unified AI platform that will bring together federal scientific data, supercomputers, national laboratories and private sector partners. The White House described the project as comparable in ambition to the Apollo space programme and the Manhattan Project.
Michael Kratsios, who heads the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, said the mission is aimed at improving coordination between government agencies and using AI more effectively to drive scientific progress.
What is the Genesis Mission
The Genesis Mission focuses on applying advanced AI tools from the technology and business sectors to scientific research. Its goal is to accelerate discoveries in critical areas such as healthcare, energy, manufacturing and national security.
The programme will focus on several high-priority fields including biotechnology, critical materials, nuclear fission and fusion, space exploration, quantum science, semiconductors and microelectronics.
Key steps outlined in the executive order
As part of the plan, the Department of Energy will establish the “American Science and Security Platform”. This system will combine high-performance computing, AI models, large scientific datasets and automated research systems to modernise how experiments and research are conducted.
The order sets clear deadlines for implementation. Within 60 days, the Energy Secretary must provide a list of at least 20 major science and technology challenges the programme will focus on. Within 240 days, the department must assess whether national laboratories are ready for advanced robotic and automated research systems. Within 270 days, at least one challenge must show an initial working capability.
Coordination across government agencies will be led by the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology through the National Science and Technology Council to ensure the mission supports broader national goals.
