A shocking incident unfolded at a Buddhist temple in Thailand when a woman believed to be dead was discovered alive inside her coffin just before her cremation was to begin.
The incident took place at Wat Rat Prakhong Tham temple in Nonthaburi, on the outskirts of Bangkok. Temple staff noticed unusual movement coming from a white coffin placed in the back of a pickup truck. A video later shared by the temple on Facebook showed the 65-year-old woman lying inside, covered but visibly breathing and moving.
Staff first became concerned after hearing faint knocking sounds from within the coffin. Pairat Soodthoop, the temple’s general manager, said they were confused and alarmed by the noise.
“I was a bit surprised, so I asked them to open the coffin, and everyone was startled," Pairat said. “I saw her opening her eyes slightly and knocking on the side of the coffin. She must have been knocking for quite some time."
The woman’s brother explained that she had been bedridden for the past two years and her condition had worsened significantly. Two days earlier, the family thought she had stopped breathing and assumed she had passed away.
According to him, he placed her in a coffin and travelled around 500 kilometres to a hospital in Bangkok because she had wanted to donate her organs. However, the hospital refused to accept the body without an official death certificate.
He then approached the temple for a free cremation, but staff told him they also could not proceed without the necessary documentation. While Pairat was explaining the process to obtain the death certificate, the unexpected knocking from the coffin was heard.
Upon realising the woman was alive, temple staff immediately arranged for her to be taken to a nearby hospital. The temple also agreed to cover her medical costs to ensure she received urgent care.
The incident left witnesses and staff deeply shaken, but relieved that the error was discovered in time, preventing what could have been a tragic outcome.
