Wadi Rum, also known as the Valley of the Moon, is the most surreal desert scenery in Jordan with its massive sandstone cliffs, vast red dunes, and ravines. Off the daytime appeal of the area as a trekking and adventuring location, the magic lies within the night. Wadi Rum becomes a natural planetarium as the sun sets toward the horizon, and it is one of the top places to see the stars in the world.

The desolation and absence of light pollution make the desert a perfect place to view the skies. Here the Milky Way sweeps out distinctly in the skies, the constellations are ablaze in strange chilly brightness, and the shooting stars have trails of radiance.

To experience unique starlight moments, a few Bedouin camps divide Wadi Rum for the leisure of others. Visitors are initiated into the mysteries of the universe by guided tours of the stars, traditional tents, local food and cosy hospitality. telescopes and astronomy lessons are also available in some camps for the eager learners.

The difference between Wadi Rum and the Martians is their similarity. Both NASA and movie makers have used this desert to represent the Red Planet. The landscape is surreal when, at night, the red sandstone is lit by moonlight and stars shining in the sky. No wonder, according to the travellers, it is romantic and spiritual.
