Velas: The Tiny Coastal Village Where Turtles Come to Nest

On the Konkan coast of Maharashtra lies Velas, a peaceful fishing village that has quietly become one of India’s most unique wildlife destinations. What sets Velas apart is its annual turtle nesting phenomenon, where endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles return to its shores to lay eggs.

The nesting season usually begins between late February and April. During this time, the villagers, along with the Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra and other conservation groups, protect the turtle eggs in safe hatcheries. When the hatchlings are ready, they are released into the sea, an event celebrated with the famous Velas Turtle Festival. Watching dozens of tiny turtles instinctively crawl toward the waves at sunrise is an unforgettable experience.

Beyond turtles, Velas offers the charm of slow travel. Its pristine, uncrowded beach stretches out like a golden ribbon against the Arabian Sea. There are no flashy resorts here—most visitors stay in simple homestays run by locals, giving you an authentic taste of Konkani hospitality. The village is also known for its fresh seafood, coconut-based curries, and traditional Malvani flavours.

For nature lovers, Velas serves as a gateway to explore nearby attractions. You can visit Bankot Fort, an old coastal fort with panoramic sea views, or take a short trip to Harihareshwar, a scenic beach town with a revered Shiva temple. Birdwatchers will enjoy spotting kingfishers, herons, and migratory species in the surrounding mangroves.
