A major leap in India’s mountain transport infrastructure is on the horizon as construction is set to begin on the country’s longest passenger ropeway, connecting Dehradun and Mussoorie. Once complete, the 5.2-km mono-cable detachable gondola system will slash travel time between the two popular Uttarakhand destinations to just 20 minutes.
The ropeway, being developed by Mussoorie Sky Car Private Limited—a consortium of FIL Industries Private Limited, France-based POMA SAS, and SRM Engineering LLP—is expected to be operational by September 2026. The system will rise nearly 1,000 metres in elevation and, upon completion, will be the longest ropeway of its kind in South Asia and one of the longest in the world.
Designed to promote sustainable tourism and improve urban mobility in the Himalayan region, the project was recently unveiled at INTERALPIN 2025, a leading international trade fair for alpine technologies held in Innsbruck, Austria. This marks the formal commencement of the project and highlights the collaboration between the three companies.
FIL Industries, the project's lead developer, is India’s largest CEN-certified ropeway operator and has already made its mark with the successful Skyview by Empyrean in Patnitop, Jammu and Kashmir. Operational since 2019, the 2.8-km Patnitop ropeway holds the distinction of having the highest ground clearance among ropeways in India.
POMA SAS, a global leader in ropeway technology, is providing technical expertise, infrastructure components, and strategic investment. The Dehradun-Mussoorie project is POMA’s first concession investment in India, and the ropeway will feature European-standard safety and engineering protocols. A substantial portion of the components will be manufactured locally under POMA India, further boosting domestic capability.
SRM Engineering LLP brings financial muscle and operational expertise to the table, backed by major industry players including Rahman Group and Hindustan Dock Yard Pvt. Ltd.
“This collaboration ensures that the Dehradun-Mussoorie ropeway will be India’s safest and most advanced cable car system,” said Syed Junaid Altaf, Group Executive Director, FIL Industries Private Limited. “With global standards in design and technology, we aim to position India as a hub for world-class, sustainable ropeway systems.”
In a further boost to its portfolio, the consortium has also been awarded the prestigious Yamunotri Ropeway Project. Stretching 3.8 km from Kharsali to Yamunotri, this ropeway is poised to transform access to one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in the country, reducing travel strain for thousands of devotees.
Together, these developments are set to redefine mountain mobility in India, while showcasing the potential of sustainable infrastructure in eco-sensitive zones.
