Popular video-stream platform, YouTube, celebrated its 20th anniversary on April 23, as the first video on the website titled ‘Me at the zoo’, a 19-second video uploaded by YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim documenting his experience in front of elephants at a zoo, was published two decades ago. To commemorate this occasion, YouTube is unveiling new features, engagement stats, hidden tools, and special additions.
YouTube’s 20th anniversary: All new features
In a blog post, YouTube detailed the new features it’s rolling out as part of its 20th anniversary celebration. First off, YouTube’s rolling out 4x playback speed for YouTube Premium subscribers, which can toggle a faster video playback for users who want to watch a long video quickly or seek forward quickly. Moreover, users can now select various speeds above 2x, including 2.05x, 2.5x, 3x, and 4x.
In addition, YouTube announced the launch of personalised radio stations via Ask Music. This feature is available to YouTube Premium and YouTube Music users on both iOS and Android, and it leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to generate a radio station based on voice-based descriptions. It allows YouTube users to generate custom radio stations according to their mood and is currently available in English in select countries, with more languages and regions planned.
Meanwhile, YouTube TV subscribers are getting a new viewing experience with improved navigation, better playback, quality tweaks, and streamlined access to comments, channel information, and subscriptions. Further, YouTube TV will soon let users build their multiviews, which will initially start with ‘select non-sports content’ and expand in the coming months.
