WhatsApp’s browser-based client is getting closer to supporting voice and video calls, according to new findings by WABetaInfo. While calling has long been available on the mobile app and desktop versions, WhatsApp Web users have been limited to messaging—until now.
WABetaInfo recently discovered new call buttons appearing in the WhatsApp Web interface. These include the familiar phone and video camera icons seen in the mobile app, now appearing in browser-based group chats. The feature appears to be in testing and is not yet widely rolled out.
Last month, WhatsApp made a quiet update by adding a dropdown call menu within chats for beta testers, offering a more streamlined way to initiate calls. The new browser additions suggest the company is now expanding that work across platforms.
Once officially released, the update could bring WhatsApp Web more in line with full-fledged communication platforms like Microsoft Teams or Zoom. The appeal? Making voice and video calls without needing to download or install anything—just launch it in a browser like Chrome, Safari, or Edge.
No timeline has been shared yet, but the feature would make WhatsApp far more versatile for people who use it across multiple devices.
