Threads wants to take on Reddit, X with its latest feature

Meta’s Threads is going after the Reddit and X crowd with a new feature: communities. Now rolling out worldwide on web and mobile, communities are dedicated spaces where users can dive into posts around shared interests—from basketball and K-pop to books, TV shows, AI, and beyond.

Joining a community not only gives you a dedicated feed but also stamps your profile with that membership. Communities you’re part of also get pinned to your feeds menu, making them easy to revisit. The setup feels familiar: Reddit has subreddits, X has communities, and now Threads is trying to build its own ecosystem of interest-based hubs.

Communities expand on Threads’ existing topics and custom feeds, which already let users curate timelines around specific subjects. In practice, each community shows a blend of posts created directly within the group and posts related to the topic more broadly. Threads is also adding a playful touch—each community gets its own custom emoji for likes. For instance, in book communities, the heart is replaced with a stack of books.

Finding communities is straightforward: search for your interest, and if one exists, it’ll show up with a three-dot badge next to the tag. Not every interest has a space yet, but Threads says more are coming.
