Amit Gupta, the region head of Qatar and Kuwait at Tech Mahindra, has in detained by the Qatari State Security in Doha since January, his family has said. According to media reports, Gupta was detained on charges of data theft in an ongoing investigation.
Tech Mahindra has said the company is in close contact with the family and providing necessary assistance.
Responding to Moneycontrol’s queries, a Tech Mahindra spokesperson said in a statement, “We remain in close contact with the family, providing necessary support to them. We are also actively coordinating with authorities in both countries and adhering to the due process. Ensuring the wellbeing of our colleague is our top priority.”
Gupta, who hails from Gujarat's Vadodara and is an IT industry veteran, has been with the company since 2013, his LinkedIn profile said. He has been leading the enterprise business for Tech Mahindra in Qatar and Kuwait over the last three years.
His wife Akanksha Gupta has sought the intervention of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), while his father, Jagdish Gupta, who retired from ONGC, has reached out to Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra for help, media reports said.
According to reports, Amit was detained by Qatari authorities on January 1. His father said Amit was arrested by the security agency and sent in solitary confinement. His parents went to Qatar after the arrest and stayed there for a month but could only meet their son once for half an hour, reports said.
