Samsung adds 3D capture support on Galaxy phones ahead of Android XR headset launch

Samsung is preparing its Galaxy devices for the debut of its upcoming Android XR headset, codenamed Project Moohan. A new option has appeared in the Camera Assistant app, enabling Galaxy phones to capture spatial photos and videos designed for immersive viewing on the headset.

First spotted by SamMobile, the feature shows up as a “3D Capture” toggle in Camera Assistant v4.0.0.3. Once enabled, it allows users to create content with added depth for playback in an XR environment. Samsung describes it as a way to “create spatial photos and videos for Galaxy XR headsets.”

Currently, the option is limited. While the updated app can be installed on the Galaxy S25 FE, the 3D Capture button only appears when running on the Galaxy S25 Ultra. When active, the camera viewfinder displays an outline of Project Moohan, hinting at the integration with Samsung’s headset.

Samsung’s move mirrors Apple’s strategy with the Vision Pro, where iPhones can capture spatial photos and videos for playback on the headset. The difference, however, is that Samsung has tucked the feature into its Camera Assistant app, part of the Good Lock suite, instead of making it a native option in the default camera app. This isn’t the first time Samsung has hidden important features in its customisation modules before eventually integrating them system-wide.
