Perplexity has officially launched Comet Plus, a premium content tier designed to bring high-quality journalism into its AI-powered browser experience. With Comet Plus, users (or their AI assistants) gain direct access to premium stories from leading publishers — and Perplexity says it will compensate those publishers in new ways tailored for the AI era.
What is Comet Plus?
Comet Plus is a $5 standalone subscription (included for free with Perplexity’s Pro and Max plans) that grants users frictionless entry to curated, trustworthy journalism inside the Comet browser. Rather than rely solely on clicks and traffic, Perplexity says it will compensate participating publishers based on how their content is consumed and referenced by its AI tools.
Publishers on Board at Launch
Perplexity’s launch partners read like a who’s-who of global media: CNN, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, Le Monde, Le Figaro, Fortune, and Condé Nast (which includes brands such as Wired, GQ, Vogue, The New Yorker, and more). These publications will make premium articles available directly inside Comet for Plus users.
Why It Matters
Perplexity argues that this model pushes back against the low-quality, clickbait-heavy content model of the past. By aligning journalistic value with AI consumption, it hopes to build a web where users and creators both benefit. The company also emphasizes that publishers “own the direct relationship with their audience” under Comet Plus, instead of being buried under referral links
