The global search market is set to get a new entrant as ChatGPT maker OpenAI announced SearchGPT, a new AI-powered search engine. In a blog post, the company said that it is testing a prototype of new search features “designed to combine the strength of our AI models with information from the web to give you fast and timely answers with clear and relevant sources.”
As of now, SearchGPT will be available to a small group of users and publishers to get feedback. However, the big idea is to integrate search capabilities directly into ChatGPT. “While this prototype is temporary, we plan to integrate the best of these features directly into ChatGPT in the future.
How will SearchGPT work?
According to OpenAI, users require multiple attempts at the moment to get the relevant results for their search queries. OpenAI will enhance the conversational capabilities of its models with real-time information from the web, to make search faster and easier. "SearchGPT will quickly and directly respond to your questions with up-to-date information from the web while giving you clear links to relevant sources," said OpenAI in a blog post.
OpenAI has also partnered with publishers and is giving them a way to manage how they appear in SearchGPT, so publishers have more choices. Importantly, SearchGPT is about search and is separate from training OpenAI’s generative AI foundation models. "Sites can be surfaced in search results even if they opt out of generative AI training," said the company.
Users who are keen to try out SearchGPT can sign up for the waitlist. It's not known when SearchGPT will roll out for all users.
