OpenAI has announced ChatGPT for Teachers, a new version of its popular AI chatbot, built specifically for educators. It marks one of the company’s biggest pushes into the school system so far, which is being crafted for K-12 educators and school districts in the United States. It is aimed at making the teachers work more comfortably with AI, allowing them to manage their curriculum and related activities with the help of AI.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Teachers: Availability, how does it work
According to OpenAI’s latest blog post, ChatGPT for Teachers is designed to help educators prepare materials for their classes and efficiently manage student-related tasks, while also allowing them to collaborate with colleagues. The tool is initially available to a select group of districts in the US, encompassing nearly 150,000 educators, with verified K-12 teachers in the US able to access it for free until June 2027.
The company says the goal of this platform is to give teachers a controlled environment where they can explore AI without worrying about privacy or how their data will be handled. Additionally, teachers can provide ChatGPT with details such as the grade they teach, their curriculum, and their preferred response format. ChatGPT for Teachers also includes features that are not found in the free tier of ChatGPT. These include higher usage limits and access to GPT-5.1 Auto, along with access to external tools like Google Drive, Microsoft 365, and Canva.
To get started, teachers just have to verify their educator status through SheerID on OpenAI’s website to use this platform. It is currently being rolled out across several districts in the country, including Capistrano Unified School District in California, Dallas Independent School District in Texas, and Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia.
