OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has big plans for India, calling it the company’s second-largest market after the US and one that could soon take the top spot. Speaking at a media briefing during the launch of GPT-5, Altman said India’s rapid growth makes it a key focus for OpenAI.

“We are especially focused on bringing products to India, working with local partners to make AI work great for India and more affordable for people across the country,” Altman told ET. He added that the company is paying close attention to the Indian market because of how fast it is expanding.

On concerns that advanced AI coding tools could replace software engineers, Altman pushed back. “There is no evidence of that,” he told the publication, pointing out that while some companies are cutting jobs, the world’s demand for software is far from being met. “We have badly underestimated how much additional software the world wants. AI will make engineers more productive and lower the cost of creating software, unlocking huge opportunities for economic growth.”

He also touched on AI regulation, noting that different countries will take different approaches, and OpenAI will respect local laws. “All world leaders want AI to thrive in their countries, along with the economic and societal benefits it brings,” he said.
