A few weeks ago, UK-based smartphone brand Nothing teased the launch of its upcoming operating system (OS), which is based on Android 16, during the launch of its current flagship, the Nothing Phone 3. Following that, a post on the Nothing Community forum revealed that the first Closed Beta of Nothing OS 4.0 had begun rolling out to the Nothing Phone 3. However, the company has now revealed that the first stable version of this OS will roll out soon.
Nothing OS 4.0: Expected release timeline, features, eligible devices
Through a post on the social media platform X, Nothing has announced that it will start rolling out the stable version of the Android 16-based Nothing OS 4.0 soon. The post also teases the UI design of this upcoming OS, showing the design of various icons that are expected to be redesigned.
The Nothing OS 4.0 update is likely to introduce a circular torch icon featuring a red torchlight. Other notification and home screen widgets, like the Bluetooth switch, dark mode toggle, brightness adjustment icon, and other tools, are also expected to adopt circular icons. Moreover, the teaser video showcases unspecified circular icons, such as one with an umbrella image and another with a wheel-like object.
Previously, Nothing CEO Carl Pei had confirmed that Nothing OS 4.0 would begin rolling out to eligible devices in Autumn this year. This latest announcement confirms that the stable release is drawing near and could start this month. However, the Nothing Phone 1 will not receive this update, as it has reached the end of its software lifecycle. The Nothing Phone 2, the Phone 2a series, the Phone 3a series, and the Nothing Phone 3 are confirmed to receive the Nothing OS 4.0 update, alongside the CMF smartphones.
