A new study by Microsoft has revealed the 40 jobs most at risk of being replaced by artificial intelligence, painting a clear picture of which roles might be changed forever by the rise of powerful AI tools like ChatGPT.
The research, conducted by Microsoft’s data scientists, focused on the US job market but has global implications. Using something called an “AI applicability score,” the study looked at how likely AI is to be used in various jobs. While Microsoft says AI might not completely replace humans, it will definitely change the way many people work.
Microsoft researcher Kiran Tomlinson explained that the aim of the study was to understand how AI can assist in different roles, not just take them over. “Our research shows that AI supports many tasks, particularly those involving research, writing, and communication,” he said. But the reality is that employers may see AI as a way to cut costs — and cut jobs.
Jobs in writing, editing, customer service, and data analysis are among those most exposed. For example, writers, editors, translators, PR professionals, and even reporters were ranked as highly replaceable. Microsoft itself has reportedly laid off thousands of employees this year, with AI being one of the reasons.
The list also includes more surprising roles like models, market researchers, and even financial advisors. These are jobs that rely heavily on information processing or creating digital content — something large language models like Copilot or ChatGPT are now doing with ease.
On the flip side, the 40 jobs least impacted by AI tend to be hands-on roles that require a physical human presence. Think plumbers, roofers, nursing assistants, phlebotomists, and even massage therapists. These jobs, for now, are considered safe because AI tools can’t replace a human’s touch, decision-making in real-time, or work that involves physical effort.
Still, some worry that it’s only a matter of time before robotics and AI start creeping into those spaces too.
The study raises bigger questions about how societies and governments plan to handle the changes AI will bring. While some experts hope AI will free people from boring tasks or help solve big problems like disease or poverty, others fear rising unemployment, inequality, and social unrest.
