Meta Platforms is working on developing an artificial intelligence (AI)-based search engine to answer various search queries on its social media platforms such as Instagram or Facebook. The tech giant also wants to reduce dependence on Alphabet's Google and Microsoft's Bing, as reported by The Information.

The report further adds that people familiar with the matter have confirmed that Meta has set up a dedicated team to develop the search engine. This can be confirmed by an earlier report from Business Insider, which confirmed that Meta web crawlers were spotted in large numbers scouring the Internet in recent months.

Currently, the Meta AI chatbot uses Google’s Search and Microsoft’s Bing search engines to find web information for user queries on its social media platforms. However, in the long run, this could be an expensive endeavor for the company as its API requests are accumulated in large volumes, and without monetization, the company may have to bear higher costs.

Meta has not officially acknowledged this development. However, its rivals such as OpenAI have already confirmed that they are working on an AI search engine named SearchGPT, and Meta may want to play catch up soon. Moreover, other big tech companies are also working on either trying to rival Google's search engine or building their in-house search engine to have a seamless experience across their interface for users.
