Meta has rolled out direct messaging (DM) support on Threads, its microblogging platform, enabling users to connect privately with one another. The feature, long requested by users, brings Instagram-style messaging to Threads, allowing for one-on-one conversations within the app. The update is now live for all users aged 18 and above, as Meta looks to strengthen interpersonal interactions alongside public conversations.
The launch marks Threads’ second anniversary and comes as the app continues to establish its own identity. According to Meta, over a third of daily Threads users follow different accounts than they do on Instagram, suggesting a unique user base is taking shape.
How to access DMs in Threads
To start a conversation, users can open a profile on Threads and tap the message icon to send a DM. Messaging is currently limited to followers or mutual Instagram followers who are at least 18 years old. Meta says this restriction is in place to maintain safety and encourage positive exchanges.
While the first version of messaging focuses on one-on-one conversations, more features are in development. Users will soon get new tools, including:
• Message controls: Decide who can send you messages and manage requests.
• Group messaging: Chat with multiple users in the same thread.
• Inbox filters: Prioritise important messages and clean up your inbox.
Threads highlighter for trending topics
Alongside DMs, Meta also announced the Threads Highlighter, a visual element designed to spotlight trending topics and interesting conversations. It will appear in key discovery areas of the app, helping users quickly identify content that’s sparking engagement.
Meta says the Highlighter aims to “elevate unique perspectives” and foster thoughtful dialogue — further underlining the app’s focus on open conversation and community.
