Apple is set to make its autofill for verification codes more powerful with iOS 26 and macOS Tahoe, expanding a feature that has already become indispensable for millions of users. The update will allow two-factor authentication codes to be detected not only in Apple’s own apps but also in popular third-party services.

Until now, Apple’s autofill could pull SMS codes from Messages and verification emails from Mail. The codes appear above the keyboard on iPhone and iPad and are automatically cleared after use. On Mac, autofill has worked through Safari using Text Message Forwarding.

Starting next month, iOS 26 and macOS Tahoe will extend the feature in three major ways. First, SMS codes will now be supported in third-party messaging apps on iPhone. Second, email verification codes in apps such as Gmail will be included. Finally, Mac users will be able to use autofill in third-party browsers like Chrome and Firefox, not just Safari.

The improvements will make one-time password management more seamless across platforms. For many, the addition of Chrome and Firefox support on macOS could prove the most useful, while Gmail and other third-party app support on iPhone will make the experience more consistent for everyday use.
