India's first Made-in-India chip will be produced at CG Semi's outsourced semiconductor assembly and testing (OSAT) pilot facility in Sanand, Minister for Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) Ashwini Vaishnaw said.
"This pilot line (G1 facility) will produce 0.5 million chips per day, and our first Made-in-India chip will come from here," Vaishnaw said at a press conference, after the inauguration of the OSAT facility inaugurated on August 28, adding that the production in the plant will begin soon.
The pilot line is important, Vaishnaw explained, as it will help in qualifying the chips for customer approval and get them ready for commercial production. "The customers will include those in automobile, electronics sector, consumer electronics, micro controllers and so on," he informed.
The plant is a joint venture between CG Power, Japan's Renesas Electronics Corporation and Thailand's Stars Micro.
The full facility (G2 facility) will span between 28–32 acres and will produce 14.5 million units per day. Engineering services company Jacobs, known for designing key semiconductor fabs worldwide, is the turnkey contractor for building the plant.
The construction of the larger plant will begin in 2026, with full-scale production slated to begin in 2027, Vaishnaw said.
Vaishnaw also visited Micron’s assembly, testing, marking, and packaging (ATMP) facility on August 28, and said that the company, like CG Semi, is also constructing a pilot line.
Alongside Micron, Kaynes Technology in Sanand and Tata’s plant in Assam have also begun constructing pilot lines.
"I just saw the construction for Micron, going on at a very fast place. That pilot plant is also going to start producing within December or January (2026).
The pilot line in assam is under construction. Kaynes will also initiate the pilot line, by the end of this year," Vaishnaw added.
At the inauguration, Vellayan Subbaiah, chairman of CG Power said, "Our facility represents more than a milestone for me, CG. It is a national milestone. It shows how government, industry can come together at a scale."
"Today, however, is just the beginning. To build on this launch, we require, industries to support each other. As India's demand grows we must start moving to making chips to using Chips that are made in India," he added.
