OpenAI has appointed Indian-origin engineer Vijaye Raji as its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Applications. The announcement comes alongside the company’s acquisition of Statsig, a platform widely known for powering A/B testing, feature flagging, and real-time decision-making for top global companies.
Raji, who previously founded Statsig and served as its CEO, will now report to Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications at OpenAI. In his new role, he will lead product engineering for ChatGPT and Codex, overseeing not just the core systems but also key product lines, including infrastructure and integrity.
Raji brings with him more than a decade of experience in building large-scale consumer products, having earlier worked at Meta where he played a crucial role in scaling engineering operations. His move to OpenAI reflects the company’s ambition to strengthen its applications while continuing to expand its AI offerings to millions of users worldwide.
“Vijaye has a remarkable record of building new consumer and B2B products and systems at scale,” said Fidji Simo. “He’s joining at a time when our models are opening entirely new ways to build, and his leadership will help turn that progress into safe applications that empower people, help companies increase their impact, and allow developers to build faster and better products.”
In a statement, Raji called his appointment “an extraordinary opportunity” to contribute to OpenAI’s mission of advancing safe and reliable AI. “The journey with Statsig has been deeply gratifying, leading me to this moment and giving me conviction that we will continue helping teams ship better software every day,” he said.
Statsig, the company Raji co-founded, has already played a role in OpenAI’s rapid experimentation processes. Bringing it in-house is expected to further accelerate the development of ChatGPT and other products. Once the acquisition is completed, Statsig employees will join OpenAI but continue operating independently out of Seattle, ensuring continuity for its existing customer base.
OpenAI said the integration will be gradual, with a focus on maintaining stability while exploring ways to strengthen its applications ecosystem.
With Raji at the helm of applications engineering and Statsig’s capabilities formally brought under its umbrella, OpenAI is positioning itself to scale its next generation of products, turning cutting-edge AI research into tools designed to be intuitive, safe, and widely useful.
