Google Photos is adding a creative twist to its simple editing tools. The new update introduces pre-built video templates that automatically match your photos and clips to music beats, add text overlays, and create clean transitions — all part of Google’s plan to make short video creation faster and more fun.
The feature builds on the existing Highlight video tool that launched in 2023. Each template comes “pre-packaged” with music, timing, and styling, so users just have to select their media and let Google do the rest. There’s even a Help me select option that uses AI to pick your best shots based on people, places, or dates.
However, the rollout is still in progress. Many users are still seeing the old Highlight video option, though Google has detailed the new templates on its support page.
How to create templates
- Open the Google Photos app and tap Create > Highlight video.
- Browse the available templates and tap Use template of your choice.
- Select your photos and videos. You can do this manually or use the Help me select feature, which uses Search or suggestions (people, places, dates).
- Tap Next to generate the video.
- From there, you can review, customize the clips/music/text, and tap Save.
Google clearly wants to make Photos more relevant in the age of Reels and TikTok. The app has always been great for storage and search, but not necessarily fun. These new templates aim to change that — offering casual creators a shortcut to share-worthy, beat-synced videos straight from their gallery.
