Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition recently got a surprise update after 3 years, as per a report by Rockstar Intel. The update includes much needed fixes to game lighting and other improvements to the trilogy.

Released in 2021, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy— The Definitive Edition consists of the “definitive” versions of Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. When the GTA trilogy came to PC and console, it should have been lapped up by longtime GTA players but came under a lot of criticism, especially for the new lighting system.

The new environmental lighting system was employed across the three definitive editions of the Grand Theft Auto games; the downside was that it messed with and took away their distinctive tints. For example, the dominant orange hue of GTA San Andreas was stripped away. The character models were also not liked. Moreover, there were reports of crashes and bugs in the GTA trilogy definitive edition games on launch.

Naturally, GTA fans were unhappy with the lighting changes and Rockstar Games had to take notice of the player response. It eventually had to apologise and re-release the classic PC version of games on its store. The Take-Two Interactive subsidiary offered the classic PC games for free to those who’d purchased Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy— The Definitive Edition.
