Google recently concluded its annual developer conference event, Google I/O 2024, and it particularly highlighted the new artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives the company took and how it plans to integrate them within its Android platform. A video shared by the company titled ‘Android on-Device' under the hood revealed the plans to integrate AI into its Android operating system with on-device processing.
The 19-minute long video was shared on YouTube in Google's Android Developers Channel, and their developers shared the benefits of AI within devices and its limitations. Google further revealed the benefits of AI processing processing with its online availability, reduced latency, and local processing, at a zero extra cost.
Additionally, Google has integrated Gemini Nano into the Android system from Android 14 onwards through a service called AICore. The company has also assured that it will enable more developers to access and use Gemini Nano to bring apps powered by on-device AI to Android smartphones.
Meanwhile, Google will soon be using Gemini Nano for TalkBack captions, Gemini dynamic suggestions, and spam alerts. It also plans to use it with a Multimodality update that will be introduced later this year.
Most of Google's current on-device AI features such as Magic Compose, Summarise in Pixel Recorder, Circle to search, and Gboard smart replies are all built on Gemini Nano AI features. Further, Google has also confirmed that the Google Talkback service will also get an upgrade later this year, which will also be based on Gemini Nano.
We can also expect Gemini Nano availability to be available for third-party developers in the future, with the AI model already powering some smartphones like the S24 series or the Google Pixel 8 series.
