Android 16 Developer Preview 2 (DP2) has been released by Google for Pixel devices. This is the second developer Android 16 update after the first update was introduced last month, and it comes with several enhanced features, performance improvements, better app opening speeds, and system optimizations. The stable version of Android 16 is set to debut between April and June 2025, and Google has confirmed that the beta program will kick off in January 2025.
Android 16 Developer Preview 2: New features
Google has released a blog post stating that the latest preview is available for Pixel 6 and newer devices, including the Pixel Tablet. This Android 16 update is designed to enhance performance, accessibility, and security. It also brings some new features and UI improvements. Here are all the key features of the Android 16 DP2 update.
Notes shortcut: With Android 16, users will be able to set up and access a new ‘Note-taking’ shortcut on the Pixel’s lock screen. Moreover, this feature will allow you to select your favourite notes app for this purpose.
Screen-off fingerprint: With Android 16 DP2, Google has introduced a new option that allows users to access the in-display fingerprint sensor even if the device’s screen is off. The feature makes biometric authentication faster and more seamless.
Photo picker cloud option: Android’s new photo picker interface, first previewed in Android 16 Developer Preview 1, has been updated with a cloud search option.
Health Connect: The DP2 update also adds a new Activity Intensity metric to Android’s Health Connect.
Other features: We also get a new battery indicator design for paired Bluetooth accessories. The DP2 update has new app animations as well.
