Google Photos is receiving a major artificial intelligence upgrade with the rollout of Nano Banana, the company’s latest image-editing model. Integrated directly into the Photos app, Nano Banana brings generative AI capabilities that allow users to transform, restyle, and enhance their photos using natural language prompts. Alongside this, Google is expanding its Ask Photos feature and adding AI-powered templates for faster creation.
How to access Nano Banana AI in Google Photos
Nano Banana is being integrated into the Google Photos editor as part of Gemini-powered tools. To access it, users need to update their Google Photos app to the latest version. The feature is currently rolling out in stages to eligible users in the U.S. with Gemini-enabled Photos accounts.
Once available, users can open any image in Google Photos, tap the “Help me edit” button, and then describe the change they want to make using text or voice commands. The AI model processes the request and applies the edit automatically—no manual slider adjustments or layer tools required.
Google also announced that conversational editing is now coming to iOS, meaning iPhone users can soon make AI-driven edits using natural language or voice input, similar to Android users.
Things you can do with Nano Banana
- Nano Banana allows users to creatively transform their photos beyond simple corrections. You can:
- Restyle images in different artistic themes such as Renaissance portraits, mosaics, or storybook illustrations.
- Edit facial expressions or fix minor imperfections like closed eyes or missing smiles using your photo library’s face groups.
- Apply AI templates for quick edits through the Create with AI section in the Create tab.
- Generate personalized images, such as professional headshots, holiday cards, or fashion photoshoots.
The AI model uses contextual understanding of your photo gallery to create personalized templates based on your activities and preferences, like turning your hobbies into doodles or cartoons.
Prompts you should know
The feature relies on clear, descriptive prompts. Some useful examples include:
“Make this photo look like a Renaissance painting.”
“Remove sunglasses and open my eyes.”
“Turn this picture into a mosaic made of tiles.”
“Create a cartoon version of me playing guitar.”
“Put me in a winter holiday postcard.”
The goal is to keep prompts natural and specific. You can use simple language—no need for technical editing terms.
More updates: Ask Photos and global expansion
Alongside Nano Banana, Google is expanding Ask Photos—its AI search tool—to over 100 countries and 17 new languages. The new “Ask” button within Photos also lets users query an image for related moments or apply edits by typing a command.
With Nano Banana and Ask Photos now integrated, Google Photos is evolving into a conversational, AI-powered platform for managing and creating visual memories.
