Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran on February 28 said generative AI adoption will become the ‘net job creator’ for India while increasing productivity of the workforce significantly. He added that Gen AI would also be the enabler for entrepreneurship in the country.
Chandraskaran was speaking at the Mumbai Tech Week on February 28.
Chandrasekaran said, “On the contrary to all the apprehension, Gen AI adoption whole heartedly serve as and prove to be net job creator for India. Let’s face the reality, certain routine jobs will go. But in our case, in most situations, jobs will not go. AI/ Gen AI will assist a low-skilled person to perform at a different level of productivity. It will enhance productivity very significantly. You will see a huge increase in productivity and not in net job loss.”
But most importantly, he emphasised that Gen AI will be a boon for driving entrepreneurship in the country.
“Any entrepreneurship in this country apart from software startups has always required huge amount talent. Gen AI will enable every person with an idea to start a business with very few people,” he added.
His comments are in line with the Tata Group company TCS’ CEO K Krithivasan’s recent thoughts, as he said while AI agents are a huge innovation, it will only disrupt the way how certain engineering roles function instead of completely replacing them.
Chandrasekaran also called for the country to develop "India AI stack" to benefit from artificial intelligence (AI) revolution.
He laid out a blueprint for this AI stack, which he said should be built on four key pillars.
Firstly, the foundational layer that would provide the core computing infrastructure, data repositories in a secured way.
Secondly, the capability layer which involves building AI models, developer tool kits, and horizontal elements needed to leverage the foundation layer. Third will be the application layer to build solutions for different functionalities and the government.
And lastly, the governance layer. Culminating it all, this layer would establish the policies and regulations to ensure AI is deployed in alignment with Indian values and priorities.
