Facebook is introducing a new algorithm update that will display more short-form Reels videos tailored to users’ preferences. It focuses on improving the recommended and shared content for users and will curate videos specific to user interests through AI-powered search suggestions and interactive ‘friend bubbles.’ It marks another big step in Meta’s push to use AI to improve what people see on their feeds.

Facebook’s Reels recommendations: Here’s what’s new

According to Meta, this new Facebook algorithm update will aim to show users 50% more Reels posted on the same day they are browsing, prioritising timeliness and relevancy, as Facebook seeks to keep users returning to the platform by delivering content based on current trends. Moreover, the recommendation engine also adjusts based on user feedback.

The updated algorithm will also allow users to indicate their disinterest in certain types of videos by selecting ‘Not Interested’ on a Reel or flagging their dislike through a comment.
This feedback will then help the recommendation engine to adjust accordingly. The updated ‘Save’ tool makes it simpler to organise and revisit favourite Reels and posts. Additionally, each saved Reel also helps Facebook’s algorithm better understand personal preferences, gradually improving content recommendations.
