Apple has rolled out the iPadOS 18 as a free update for compatible iPad models. The new iPadOS 18 introduces new Apple Pencil features like Calculator with Math Notes and new Smart Script handwriting tools in Notes. The iPadOS 18 also brings users more customisation options for the Home Screen and Control Center.
iPadOS 18: Compatible iPad models
The iPadOS 18 is available for “iPad Pro (M4), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation and later), iPad Air (M2), iPad Air (3rd generation and later), iPad (7th generation and later) and iPad mini (5th generation and later)”.
As per Apple, some features of the iPadOS 18 “are not available in all regions, all languages, or on all devices”.
Apple Intelligence comes to iPadOS 18 in October
Apple announced that Apple Intelligence will come to iPadOS 18 running on iPad with M1 chip and later at the start of October.
“The first set of Apple Intelligence features” will be available in beta next month as part of iPadOS 18.1, with more features to be made available over the coming months, Apple said in a press statement.
iPadOS 18 features: Calculator, Smart Script, more ways to customise
With the arrival of Calculator on the iPad, you can now use the Apple Pencil to solve expressions. The Calculator on iPad also brings “basic and scientific calculators with a new history function and unit conversions”.
The Math Notes function allows users “to type mathematical expressions or write them out to see them instantly solved in handwriting like their own”. The iPadOS 18 Math Notes update will also allow users to “create and use variables, and add an equation to insert a graph”.
As per Apple, the Smart Script function makes editing handwritten text easier; you can add space, or paste typed text in your own handwriting. You can even “scratch out handwritten text to delete it”.
Apple claims that Smart Script “maintains the look and feel of a user’s personal handwriting, automatically refining it in real time to be smoother, straighter, and more legible”.
The iPadOS 18 adds new options to customise Home Screen. You can “place app icons and widgets in any open position to frame the wallpaper or create the ideal layout on each page. App icons can be customised to appear light, dark, with a tint, and larger for a new streamlined look that removes the name underneath”.
In iPadOS 18, the Control Center has got a redesign for easier access to things iPad users do every day. iPad users can also now “add controls from supported third-party apps into Control Center”.
The Photos app has also got “its biggest update ever” and will now have a “simplified and customisable app layout” to help users browse by themes without having to organize content into albums.
The iPadOS 18 brings new features to Messages like “all-new animated text effects, redesigned Tapbacks that expand to include any emoji or sticker, and new text formatting options, including bold, underline, and italics”.
