Apple has finally released the first public beta updates of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, after unveiling them last month at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 event. Eligible Apple device owners can experience these latest OS updates first-hand before the official launch, which is scheduled for release in September or early October.
iOS 18, iPadOS 18 public beta update: How to download
First, you need to enroll your Apple Account (Apple ID) in the Apple Beta Software Program. Then after registering your account open the Settings app on your eligible iPhone and then tap on Software Update > turn on Beta Updates > select iOS 18 Public Beta, and then tap on Update Now.
Similarly, for eligible iPads, you need to enroll your Apple ID in the Apple Beta Software Program. Now, open Settings > tap on General and Software update > select Beta Updates and download iPadOS 18 Public Beta.
Do note that these are still beta version OS updates, so bugs and issues could occur. In addition, your device should be atleast 50% charged.

The iOS 18 public beta update introduces significant new features. Apple has finally provided home screen customisations, allowing apps or folders to be placed freely anywhere on the screen. The update also introduces new control center options, a new dark theme and wallpaper-based tinting for icons and widgets.
The Photos app gets a fresh layout as well. The Safari browser also now offers article summaries and auto-generated tables of contents.
iPadOS 18 also has new features and enhancements, as we finally get the much-awaited Calculator app on iPads. Apple has also provided Smart Script that makes handwritten notes fluid and easier to read with the help of Apple Pencil. Both the iOS versions now get app locking feature as well.
While these betas lay the groundwork for Apple Intelligence, the AI-powered features themselves will arrive in later betas this fall, exclusively for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, as well as Macs and iPads powered by Apple silicon (M1 and later).
