Apple is developing several prototypes of its second-generation Studio Display, which could be released by next year. The Cupertino-based technology giant launched its first Studio Display in 2022, and previous rumours and leaks have tipped the company to introduce its successor this year or the next. Now, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has released new information suggesting that Apple is working on several versions.
Apple’s second-generation Studio Display: Here’s what we can expect
In the latest edition of the Power On newsletter, Gurman shed light on Apple's plans to replace its Studio Display with a new external Mac monitor. While previous reports suggested that the company was working on a new product with the model number J427, the report has mentioned that another Studio Display with the model number J527 is also in development.
Gurman has also tipped that J427 and J527 might end up not being distinct products, and instead, Apple is just making mock models for now with multiple options for a second-generation Studio Display. This would make a fair bit of sense, as the first Apple Studio Display was released over three years ago, and the company could provide improvements in the next-generation display.
Notably, Gurman has added that Apple may adopt one of the following two strategies: either choose between the two prototypes as the final variant of the production-spec model or introduce both of them with different screen sizes or hardware features. To recall, the earlier version of the Studio Display was slightly underwhelming in terms of camera quality, and Apple had to subsequently issue a firmware update to patch up this issue. Therefore, this upcoming Studio Display might offer better hardware features at different price categories.
