Apple is doubling down on its satellite ambitions. A new report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says the company is preparing a host of next-generation upgrades for iPhone’s satellite connectivity — and is even toying with the idea of running its own satellite service instead of relying on partners like Globalstar or SpaceX.

Apple’s interest in satellites dates back more than a decade, but it was only in 2022 that the company introduced the first practical use case — Emergency SOS via satellite on the iPhone 14. Since then, the feature has expanded to several regions and has already been credited with saving lives. But Gurman’s report suggests Apple is far from done.

The Cupertino giant is said to be exploring five major enhancements. First, it’s developing a framework for third-party apps to use the iPhone’s satellite connection, allowing developers to build off-grid tools — for example, messaging or safety apps that work without cellular or Wi-Fi.

Second, Apple wants to bring satellite-powered maps, letting users navigate off-network areas without pre-downloading data. Then there’s the plan to support photo messaging via satellite, expanding the current text-only limitation.
