Apple’s popular TWS earbuds, AirPods, have been popular amongst the masses in the last few years, and now according to a new report by Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is developing its next-generation AirPods with built-in camera modules. These new AirPods will also feature infrared (IR) technology similar to the Face ID used in iPhones and iPads.
Moreover, these next-generation AirPods will feature voice isolation and other advanced functionalities to enhance user experience. We have recently seen all these features being first introduced by Apple in its newly launched Apple Vision Pro. The move also appears to be aimed at facilitating the synchronisation of advanced features across Apple’s ecosystem of devices.
Additionally, Kuo has added that the infrared sensor on these AirPods will have the ability to detect environmental changes which means that these earphones will also support Air Gestures. Kuo also states that Foxconn has been identified as the new product introduction (NPI) supplier for these IR cameras. The annual capacity plan has reportedly been set to 18–20 million units, which translates to about 10 million AirPods.
Previously, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman had reported that AirPods with cameras are just one of the wearable form factor ideas that Apple is planning to make. We can also expect smart glasses similar to Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses. Gurman further states that we can anticipate a smart ring as well from the Cupertino-based tech giant.
Apple is reportedly also considering AI and health sensors for the upcoming AirPods. It will capture data and process it via AI to assist people in daily activities.
