Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has revealed that artificial intelligence is now writing a big chunk of the company’s code—around 30%, in fact. Speaking at Meta’s first-ever LlamaCon AI developer event in California, Nadella said that in some of Microsoft’s projects, AI is writing up to one-third of the software code.

“I’d say maybe 20 to 30% of the code inside our repositories today is probably written by software,” he shared during a live chat with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Nadella added that the role of AI in coding is only increasing with time.

When he asked Zuckerberg how much of Meta’s code was AI-generated, Zuckerberg said he wasn’t sure about the exact percentage but added something interesting. He revealed that Meta is building an AI that could eventually help create future versions of its own Llama AI models. He predicted that within the next year, about half of Meta’s software development could be done by AI.

Both Microsoft and Meta have large teams of human developers, but they’re now relying more on machines to handle at least some of the work. They’re not alone. Other tech giants like Google, Shopify, and Duolingo are also embracing AI to take over tasks once handled by people.
