Prithvi Shaw is all set to mark a new chapter in his cricketing career after switching his allegiance from Mumbai to Maharashtra. As reported by Sportstar, the 26-year-old is in line to be lead Maharashtra in the league stage of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The development comes after Ruturaj Gaikwad was named in the 15-member squad for the three-match ODI series against South Africa, starting from November 30 in Ranchi.
Gaikwad was set to lead Maharashtra in the domestic T20 competition. The Maharashtra selection committee notably had not named a vice-captain while announcing the 16-member-squad on Friday.
The report cited sources within the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) confirming the development. The report mentioned that Shaw was previously advised to be prepared for the role.
An official announcement confirming the same is expected to arrive on Monday.

Shaw, once touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket, lost his way after a smashing Test debut in 2018, with his last India appearance being in 2021. He had slammed the third fastest double century in Ranji Trophy last month. He achieved the feat during Maharashtra's Ranji Trophy match against Chandigarh. Shaw got to his double century in just 141 balls, achieving the feat in the second innings of the match.
Shaw's redemption arc since switching from Mumbai to Maharashtra has been noteworthy. He previously scored 111 off 141 balls in his first innings for Maharashtra in the Buchi Babu Trophy match against Chhattisgarh. In a practice match against his former side Mumbai ahead of Ranji Trophy, Shaw had hammered a splendid 181 off 220 balls, featuring 21 fours and 3 sixes.
The batter has so far amassed 470 runs in seven innings, featuring a double-century and three half-centuries, in Ranji Trophy 2025-26.
Shaw switched to Maharashtra after he was axed from the Mumbai squad due to disciplinary reason last season. In addition, he also went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction, something which he had anticipated as admitted by Shaw in an interview. The fresh development comes at a perfect time for Shaw as we head towards the mini auction for IPL 2026.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra have been pooled alongside drawn Jammu & Kashmir, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Goa in Group B. Meanwhile, the report stated that Maharashtra will play all its league matches in Kolkata with the first scheduled to be played on Wednesday (November 26) against Jammu & Kashmir.
