Pollard's official price remained set at $750,000, but Mumbai submitted an astounding $2.75 million in the tie-breaker after all four reached the $750,000 cap. Shane Bond was acquired by the Kolkata Knight Riders in the same auction after a tie-breaker with the Deccan Chargers, with KKR's covert bid coming in at $1.3 million against the same $750,000 ceiling.
The Chennai Super Kings and Deccan Chargers both reached the $2 million cap for Ravindra Jadeja in 2012, which was the most recent example. The all-rounder who would become essential to CSK's dynasty and win three IPL titles with the team was acquired by the team through an unknown tie-breaker bid that is thought to have exceeded $1 million.
Since 2012, the regulation has not been used because open bidding was made possible by the removal of maximum bid caps. It is still applicable, though, to mini-auctions, when teams with limited funds may run out.
