During the 2025 Champions Trophy semi-final between Australia and India at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, luck favored the Aussie captain in a remarkable turn of events. A bizarre incident occurred on the final ball of the 14th over when Axar Patel delivered a ball to Steve Smith. Smith got a thick inside edge onto his pad, causing the ball to roll back towards the stumps. It struck the base of the off-stump, yet, incredibly, the bails remained intact.
Smith, seemingly assuming he was bowled, watched the ball hit the stumps without intervening. However, fortune was on his side as the bails stayed in place, allowing him to continue his innings unscathed. Watch the video here...
Although the ball made a noticeable impact on the stumps, cricket laws state that a batter is only out if the bails are fully dislodged. This rare incident left Indian players and fans in shock, while Australia heaved a sigh of relief.
Earlier, Australia won the toss and opted to bat against India. The two sides met in a re-match of the 2023 Cricket World Cup final in Ahmedabad, which Australia won for its sixth ODI title.
Youngster Cooper Connolly departed early as Mohammed Shami made amends for dropping Travis Head on zero in the beginning of the contest. Later on, Head got going but was defused by mystery spinner and hero from the last game Varun Chakaravarthy. Steve Smith stood alone in the middle as he hit fifty after a small partnership with Marnus Labuschagne. Ravindra Jadeja bowled brilliantly for the Men in Blue as he took wickets if Josh Inglis and Labuschagne.
