NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is currently tracking five asteroids that will pass by Earth on October 5. These space rocks, identified as 2024 SY5, 2024 RJ32, 2024 SL3, 2024 SZ1, and 2023 GM1, pose no danger to the planet but present unique opportunities for scientific research and observation.

Asteroid 2024 SY5: Bus-Sized Object

Measuring approximately 28 feet in width, asteroid 2024 SY5 is comparable in size to a bus. It will make its closest approach to Earth at a safe distance of 1,020,000 kilometres, which is much farther than the distance between Earth and the Moon.

Asteroid 2024 RJ32: Airplane-Sized Rock

Asteroid 2024 RJ32, measuring about 130 feet wide, will safely pass by Earth at a distance of 1,820,000 kilometres. Though its size is significant, it remains far enough to ensure no threat to the planet.

Asteroid 2024 SL3: House-Sized Object

Asteroid 2024 SL3, with a width of 61 feet, will pass by Earth at a safe distance of 1,940,000 kilometres. Its size classifies it as a smaller, yet still notable, object in terms of space observation.

Asteroid 2024 SZ1: Another Airplane-Sized Rock

This asteroid is about 110 feet wide and will pass Earth at a distance of 2,620,000 kilometres. Its size makes it an ideal candidate for further scientific study.

Asteroid 2023 GM1: Bus-Sized Space Rock

Asteroid 2023 GM1, measuring 39 feet wide, will pass safely by Earth at a distance of 3,670,000 kilometres. Like the other asteroids, it offers valuable data for researchers.
While none of these asteroids pose any threat to Earth, NASA’s continued monitoring of their movements provides crucial data for understanding more about such celestial objects. Their proximity offers researchers a rare chance to gather detailed information about these space rocks, highlighting the importance of continued space observation.

NASA's JPL remains vigilant in its efforts to track asteroids and study their behaviour, contributing to a better understanding of our universe and the potential impact of future encounters.
