NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, stationed aboard the International Space Station (ISS), shared heartfelt Diwali greetings with people celebrating the festival across the US and worldwide.
In a special video message from space, Williams reflected on her unique experience celebrating Diwali 260 miles above Earth. She opened with, "Greetings from the ISS," and extended her warmest wishes for a joyful Diwali to everyone, particularly to those celebrating at the White House.

This message was featured during the White House Diwali celebrations, where Williams also acknowledged President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for supporting Diwali festivities and honoring the Indian-American community. Williams expressed her gratitude, noting, "Thank you to the President and Vice President for celebrating with our community and recognizing the contributions we make."
Williams also shared a personal reflection on her family's commitment to cultural traditions. She spoke of her father’s role in teaching her and her family about Diwali and other important Indian festivals, a tradition that she now feels honored to continue from space.
Reflecting on the significance of Diwali, she emphasized its hopeful message: "Diwali is a celebration of joy, as goodness prevails." Her inspiring message echoed the festival’s theme of light and renewal, resonating deeply with audiences on Earth.
Currently aboard the ISS, Williams has been in orbit since June 6, 2023, following a launch with astronaut Butch Wilmore on Boeing's Starliner spacecraft. Originally scheduled for a brief mission, their stay was extended after NASA decided it was "too risky" to bring them back early. The crew is now expected to return in February 2025.
