Volcanoes are one of Earth’s most dramatic wonders bursting with glowing lava, shaking ground and giant clouds of ash. But what actually makes a volcano explode? Scientists say the answer lies deep under our feet, where heat, pressure and molten rock team up to create nature’s most powerful show.

Far beneath the surface, temperatures are so high that some rocks melt and turn into magma. Magma is hot, semi-liquid rock that forms under Earth’s crust. This magma collects in huge underground pockets called magma chambers. Magma is lighter than the surrounding solid rock. So, it slowly pushes upward through Earth’s deeper layers.
