A powerful X-class solar flare has sparked a geomagnetic storm warning. The flare, classified as X7.1, erupted from the Sun on October 1, 2024. It unleashed a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) headed towards Earth at about 500 km/s. The storm is expected to hit on October 4.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has labelled the storm as G3. This indicates a strong level of geomagnetic activity, capable of affecting several technologies. Regions above 50 degrees geomagnetic latitude are most at risk. Power grids in these areas may face voltage fluctuations, causing unexpected issues.
In addition to power disruptions, satellite systems could face increased drag. This might affect the stability and orientation of satellites in low Earth orbit. Satellite navigation systems like GPS may experience outages and inaccuracies in data. High-frequency radio communications could also face signal disruptions.

Potential for Stunning Auroras
Despite these potential challenges, the storm may create stunning auroras. These light displays could be visible much further south than usual. Experts are advising industries and the public to prepare for any technical impacts.
As the geomagnetic storm approaches, staying informed is key. Taking steps to protect sensitive technology can help minimise risks.
