The Sun may be the most familiar star to humans, but it still hides mysteries in plain sight. Recent studies reveal that the colours are missing from its light spectrum. Light spectrum is where the dark lines should appear. And scientists still do not understand why.

The Sun’s Hidden Palette

When sunlight spreads into all its colours, it doesn’t produce a smooth rainbow. Instead, the spectrum shows thousands of dark absorption lines, also called Fraunhofer lines. These lines appear when atoms in the Sun’s atmosphere absorb certain wavelengths, effectively removing those colours from the light we see.
