What is Vaikasi Visakam?

Vaikasi Visakam is observed when the Visakam star (Nakshatra) aligns with the full moon (Pournami) in the Tamil month of Vaikasi, which corresponds to Vrishabha month in the solar calendar. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Murugan, also known as Skanda, Kartikeya, Shanmugam, or Arumugam, was born on this day to destroy the demon Tarkasura. He is the younger son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, and the brother of Lord Ganesha.

Lord Murugan Significance

Lord Murugan is revered as the divine warrior, known for his six faces (Arumugam), which signify his ability to see and protect all six directions—East, West, North, South, Heaven, and Patala (Netherworld). He rides a peacock, symbolizing his triumph over pride and ego, and wields a spear (Vel) as his divine weapon. Devotees believe that praying to Murugan on Vaikasi Visakam grants wisdom, protection, wealth, and spiritual strength.
